Lasting childhood memories

Once when we were young, we made mud pies in the sun, seasoned with leaves and berries from the bush that we knew not to eat.

We gathered small twigs and broke them in half to make candles
lit with tiny hands and fingertips glowing fire.

Bright eyes shut tight, busy minds focused on tomorrow,
puckered lips extinguished each candle manifesting wishes coming true.

With eyes wide open
Our young hearts flew free
Beyond limitations toward the lives, we dared to live.

Now that we are older
Our wishes grew up to become ambitious goals
We celebrate each one and give thanks for our Mississippi mud pies
full grown.
